Hi All MAST Sailors

Here's a not so quick summary of the AGM meeting from last Wednesday night
and some other notes to keep you up to date on what's happening in MAST.
Sorry for the long email but there was a lot discussed.

First off, let me thank Glyn for the outstanding work he did while
Commodore. His vision and level-headed style has served us all well and
helped grow our fleet to new heights. Nicely done!

A special thank you goes out to Kip and West Marine for opening their store
up for our meeting. As we get closer to spring, please remember to support
the people that support MAST and go buy something from the West Marine
store.

I'd also like to thank Nick Hayes for presenting his thoughts on how we can
all help "Save Sailing." I wish we would have had more time, but if you
would like to learn more about "Sailing Sailing", take a look at Nick's site
and consider buying his book. http://www.savingsailing.com

Meeting Notes:

Finance - Rick Schoos - Rick reported that we are ahead of the previous
year financially. This is largely because the number of racing members has
significantly increased. He also noted that "Social" members were slightly
down.

Membership - Jim Reinardy - Jim reported that racing membership increased by
14 members in 2011 and made a plea to all skippers to encourage their crew
to consider becoming Social members this season. We agreed to help actively
promote the Social memberships during all upcoming events.

Race Committee - Tom Heinrich - Tom reported on several things including:

. Total of 66 racing member in 2011

. 39 boat "on-line" average last season vs 33 from the year before

. Fourth division added last year seems to be universally accepted as a
successful experiment

. Updated/repaired equipment included several flags and the repair of the
leaking race buoys.

. Laura Livermore's voice recorded start sequence CD seemed to be a huge
hit with everyone that used it and it helped eliminate some of the start
sequence problems traditionally faced by volunteer race committees.

. Tom announced a plan in the works to coordinate with MCSC to help fill
needed crew spots on MAST boats. Details to follow, but everyone thought it
made sense.

. Someone suggested adding a Thursday night practice race and several of
the membership thought that may be a good idea.

. Discussed the reason to support this year's Port Washington race from a
MAST perspective.

. Discussed concerns about sailing to close to the beach on the north side
of our course. Agreed that this was an unusual circumstance due to currents
and agreed to be quicker to abandon future races if similar conditions ever
present themselves.

. Discussed moving more races toward the south side of the bay to
accommodate the South Shore boats, but decided to keep it basically the same
as 2011 since about 2/3rds of MAST boats sail out of McKinley.

General discussion points:

. Russ is willing to spearhead an effort to offer MAST specific sail race
training programs throughout the year. The first of these will be "Sail
Trim Basics" to be held February 22nd. Location is to be determined yet,
but please reserve that evening if you'd like to attend this seminar. For
questions contact Russ at veloce192@sbcglobal.net or Ken at
kenq@broadreachmarketing.net

. Sailstice was worth the effort and we will plan to move ahead with that
event again this year assuming we can get support from the other
organizations involved in the past. Charlie Kopchick got caught raising his
hand and accidentally become head of this year's Sailstice team. Thank you
Charlie!

. It was agreed that we will no longer produce a MAST Breeze newsletter and
will use email as our primary source of communication for all
correspondence.

. I threw out the idea of trying to put a bit of the "T" (Trail) back into
MAST by offering to set up a XC ski date at a nearby trail for an informal
meeting of anyone interested in doing a little skiing over an upcoming
weekend. NOTE: recent rain has delayed these plans for obvious reasons. If
we get snow, I'm looking toward February 4th as a possible date. Stay
tuned..think snow.
